Einstein prided himself on never wearing socks. The habit started because he had a prominent big toe that always wore a hole in them. His protruding toe even kept him out of military service. Although everyone wore them, he thought, “What if I don’t wear socks?” Thus, began his sockless ways and lifelong pursuit of ‘What ifs?
At 16 he asked his uncle, “What would a light beam look like if you could run alongside it at the same speed?” 10 years later he asked, “What if you couldn’t ever run alongside a light wave? What if it always caught up with you and passed you at the same speed as if you weren’t running at all?” By asking these ‘What ifs,” Einstein eventually came up with his Theory of Relativity.
But few of us are as deeply curious as Einstein. We often ask our ‘What ifs’ in more fearful ways. Here are some from my clients:
1. “What if I ask my boss for a raise and he turns me down?” Well, then he turns you down but at least he knows where you stand.
